Two suppliers quote the same platinum silicone at the same price and both look dependable on paper. Six months later one of them has answered every question inside a day and the other has not answered a single one. Dependability is not a rating; it is a pattern that shows up in small replies.
Because platinum cure material is unforgiving of a drifting formulation, that pattern decides whether a mould programme runs smoothly or turns into a series of firefighting exercises.
Can they name the curing chemistry? Platinum cure, also called addition cure, crosslinks without releasing by-products: the original stays clean and the mould holds its dimensions. Condensation cure costs less and does release by-products, and it needs a closer look wherever the finished part contacts food. A supplier who cannot explain which one they are selling is guessing at your application.
Can they give a hardness number? Shore A, in writing. Mould work spans soft confectionery moulds at one end and stiff panel moulds at the other, and the number is what tells you which side of that span you are buying.
Can they produce a sample from a specific lot? Traceability only matters when something goes wrong, and that is exactly when it is impossible to create. Ask what happens to the retained sample and who can find it three months later.
Can they line documents up with the model? ISO 9001, RoHS, REACH, FDA, UL and CE appear in most export enquiries. The useful question is whether the document covers the compound on the order.
| Dimension | Trading company | Small workshop | Manufacturer with in-house compounding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material origin | Bought and resold | Base stock bought in | Formulated on site |
| Technical replies | Forwarded upstream | Practical, narrow range | From whoever made the batch |
| Batch records | Inherited from the maker | Loose | Sampled and released per lot |
| Documentation | Passed along | Limited | Issued for the product group |
| Trial order | Often a full container | Possible, subject to stock | Small trial with a pre-production cast |
| When a mould misbehaves | Everyone waits upstream | Limited ability to investigate | Batch traceable and comparable |
Trading companies work well when the order is a standard grade in a steady volume. The arrangement frays as soon as the requirement moves: a firmer grade, a colour for a retail line, or a document the buyer's own customer asks for.
Workshops take small orders that factories decline, and plenty of studios rely on one. Their exposure is consistency, because small-lot mixing depends on who weighed and stirred that day.
Chocolate, candy and baking moulds sit at the soft end, generally 10 to 20 Shore A, where fine lettering and thin petals survive demoulding.
Soap, decorative panels and general casting usually fall between 20 and 30 Shore A.
Cultured stone, GRC and cement castings want 35 to 50 Shore A, where the wall stays upright under the fill.
Take a small trial quantity and cast it over the master you actually sell. Then set the third casting beside the first and note four changes: loss of the finest detail, any new smell, a duller surface, and a release that has grown stiffer.
Keep a cured offcut from each delivery with the batch number on it. A comparison by hand and by hardness against a new arrival takes a minute and catches more variation than any certificate.
Buyers who need documentation, adjustable hardness and traceability from one source usually settle on a manufacturer with its own compounding. HONG YE SILICONE produces addition curing mould silicone in the HY-E series from 10 to 50 Shore A, in 1:1 and 10:1 mix ratios, retains batch samples for traceability, and issues ISO 9001, RoHS, REACH, FDA, UL and CE documents by model where they apply. Export trial orders start at 10kg, and a pre-production cast on your own master is part of the process.
Judge dependability on four small things rather than on a ranking: the chemistry, the hardness number, the retained sample and the document that names your model. Then cast a trial and compare the third pull with the first.
